BHS Stage 3 coach in Complete Horsemanship & Stage 4 Coach in Teaching

I am a BHS Stage 3 coach in Complete Horsemanship and Stage 4 Coach in teaching. With 20 years experience teaching a wide variety of clients I am happy to coach all ages and abilities from those just starting out to those wishing to progress in their competition career. I am experienced competing myself up to BE Intermediate and love to share my knowledge and experience to enable my clients to achieve their ambitions.

I can travel out to clients own yards/livery yards, or clients without access to an arena/suitable area are welcome to visit Thorndike Lane Livery for training using the onsite facilities which include the arena and show-jump field.

I often coach showjumping to pony club groups and I am also happy to coach other groups on request. I also regularly run training clinics at local venues throughout North Yorkshire.

All enquiries welcome whether you are a competition rider looking to progress in your chosen discipline, or a pleasure rider wishing to improve your knowledge, confidence and safety.

Needing Extra Support?

For anyone needing that extra support I often take horses in for schooling livery to work through specific problems or just further their education. I run a professional and caring yard where your horse is the top priority. Leaving your horse in capable hands, you can be safe in the knowledge that they will be looked after as my own and will receive the individual attention required with a tailored programme to suit your needs. I will also keep you regularly updated on your horse’s progress so training programmes can be adapted whenever necessary. As each horse and its requirements vary then please give me a call to discuss your individual requirements.

“I have found Sophie to be a talented, educated rider, who can pass on her knowledge to other riders through her own observations and down to earth explanations, resulting in very worthwhile lessons. I have been impressed with her quiet, tactful riding of Misty, gaining his trust and giving him confidence to work happily with suppleness and engagement.”
Barbara Ward, BE Competitor

“Thankyou, Sophie, for all your help and advice in transforming an ‘enthusiastic’ young horse into a successful showjumper. Sophie always plans each lesson to the individual horse and rider, and adds training advice to take away and work on.”
Clarissa Kevane, BS Competitor

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes I am able to travel out to coach although I may need to charge mileage. If multiple lessons take place at one venue then the mileage charge may be waived.

Yes I have a number of clients who keep the same slot each week. If lessons become irregular I cannot guarantee to keep the slot available.

Lessons cancelled with less than 24hrs notice must be paid in full. Giving over 24 hrs allows me to offer the space to someone else.

I am fully qualified and insured through the BHS. I also hold up to date first aid and safeguarding qualifications and have been DBS checked.

With the increasing demands we place on our horses with the work we do with them and the way we manage and care for them, it is inevitable that just like humans they will feel the effects from these stresses.

Thorndikes Lane Livery

Clients without suitable facilities are welcome to visit Thorndikes Lane Livery, whether this is for coaching or for McTimoney treatment. The 25mx45m arena has a fantastic sand, fibre and rubber surface which never rides deep or has standing water, making it usable at any time of the year.
